Incredible hike in the heart of the Andes Cordillera. Lovers of wide open spaces and experienced walkers will appreciate this 5-day trek. The trek of the Salkantay is one of the rare treks which allows to arrive at the village of Aguas-Calientes (not accessible by car) and thus at Machu Picchu which comes to close in beauty this walk.

Day by day

day 1: Departure to the Salkantay trekking.
Early in the morning, departure in a shared van from Cusco to Mollepata.

Continue to Marcoccasa. (10827 feet), starting point to trek. just arriving prepare and get to know to the team coming with. after this time start the trek to get to Challacancha, and have lunch. On the way, overlooking the Salkantay glacier.

Continue to Soraypampa (12467 feet), where the camp will be set up.

Walking time: about 7 hours.

Positive altitude difference: 3300-3800 (+500 meters / 1640 feet)

day 2: The Salkantay trekking.
Departure from Soraypampa early in the morning. this journey will be the top of the trekking program, crossing over a 15092 feet high pass. just before lunch. Different views going into the high jungle.

Arriving to Challhuay camp. (9514 feet).

Walking time: about 9 hours.

Positive altitude difference: 3800 - 4600 (+800 meters / 2625 feet)

Negative altitude difference: 4600 - 2900 (-1700 meters / 5577 feet)
day 3: The Salkantay trekking.
A trekking day to enjoy the descent, and see different plantations of this area with its semi-tropical climate, such as citrus fruits, coffee and coca.

The climate softens before reaching the La Playa camp (2100 m/ 6890 ft.), near the Santa Teresa River.

Walking time: about 6 hours.

Negative altitude difference: 2900 - 2100 (- 800 meters / -2625 feet).

day 4: The Salkantay trekking.
Hike by an old inca trail to reach the inca complex of Llactapata (8497 feet), once in the time it was a rest and stop over place to reach the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu. If conditions allow, to see the remains of the lost city of the Incas. Then go down again towards the Hydroelectrica station where have lunch (6398 ft. After that, walk to Aguas Calientes (about 3 hours), located at 6726 ft.

This day allows to have a wonderful overview to Machu Picchu, from the Llatapata pass. However depending your physical condition, it will be possible to avoid some difficulties by joining hydroelectrica directly or by opting for the train. This will be decided at the moment, with the guide.

day 5: Arriving to Machu Picchu by the Salkantay trekking.
The visit of the site will last about two hours, then you will have free time to stroll around the site, rest or try to climb the Wayna-Picchu (not included).

Its particular geographical location gives it an insolent and intoxicating beauty and the geographical constraints of the region highlight the greatness and genius of the Inca civilization... Return by foot (1 hour walk) or by bus (at your expense) to Aguas-calientes.

Departure by train to Ollantaytambo.

Continuation by bus to Cusco.

Dinner at leisure in Cusco.

Overnight in Cusco.
