Vinicunca or Palccoyo: Which Rainbow Mountain Should You Visit?

Known in Quechua as Vinicunca but more commonly referred to as the "Rainbow Mountain" or "Mountain of Seven Colors," this natural wonder has recently emerged as Cusco’s second most popular attraction, right after Machu Picchu.

This striking mountain features vividly colored, well-defined mineral stripes caused by layers of clay, iron, sandstone, and limestone. However, its rapid rise in popularity has led to overcrowding, prompting travelers to seek alternatives. Fortunately, Palccoyo offers a similar—and often better—experience.

Our Recommendation

At Antipode, we’ve made a conscious decision to no longer promote Vinicunca due to overtourism. Instead, we encourage travelers to visit Palccoyo—or, for an even more secluded adventure, Pallay Punchu!
