This Pacific archipelago which consists of three main islands was used by pirates for many years as a hideout from the 16th century onward. The true story of Alexander Selkirk, who lived on one of these islands for more than four years in the 18th century, inspired Daniel Defoe for his novel Robinson Crusoe.
