Uros Islands

Uros Islands are floating islands that are built with “totora”, this reed growing on Titicaca Lake shores. It is entwined very tight on one meter before pushing it into water, it measures around 10 m on 10. The reed nature, floating, combined to the “weave” work, give it the property of lightness and resistance. During a long time, there were a lot of those islands that were built and inhabited by a population of nomadic fishermen who moved on the lake by following shoals of fish that constituted the base of their diet. Furthermore, this nomadism answered the necessity of escaping from attacks of conquerors enemies (like the Aymara or the Incas). Nowadays, it is possible to visit those islands thanks to a touristic tour relatively organized, where they give explanations about the origins and evolutions of the Uros Population. You can also buy totora handicrafts and spend a night with a host, if you get a reservation in advance.
