The Urubamba or Vilcanota River, which changes its name along its course, is one of the main tributaries of the Ucayali River, which flows into the Amazon River. For the Incas this river was considered sacred and feeds all the cultures of the sacred valley of the Incas. It is the river of the famous "Sacred Valley" but it also passes just next to Machu-Picchu where it makes a loop around the site. It is possible to raft down the river at Santa-Maria, Ollantaytambo and also on the road to Puno in Chuquicahuana and Cusipata.
