Chimbote

Chimbote is the largest fishing port in the country. The fishing industry, which flourished in the 1960s, subsequently came to a halt, following the disappearance of many fish species due to overfishing and the recurrent natural phenomenon of El Niño (see the section on Peru's particularities). Today, the city still smells like fish, and many small fishing boats, more traditional, litter the horizon at nightfall.
